Chenhan Xu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University's College of Engineering. His research focuses on the convergence of Internet of Things (IoT), Physiological Science, and Smart Health. He leads the Synergistic Sensing and Computing System (SSCS) Lab, which explores advanced embedded sensing and computing systems to enable high-impact real-world IoT applications.
Dr. Xu's research involves pioneering advancements in sensing and computing system paradigms, data analytics, signal processing, algorithms, and hardware innovations for the Internet of Human-Centric Things. His work spans three main areas: Precision Sensing that enhances IoT 'resolution' through new wireless and wearable sensing technologies; Novel Human-IoT Interfaces that enable extra 'bandwidth'; and Pervasive and Privacy-preserving mobile health that extends 'coverage' for effortless, accurate, and secure health monitoring.
His recent publications demonstrate strong focus on mmWave sensing technologies applied to healthcare monitoring, biometric authentication, and physiological signal processing. The research trends show increasing sophistication in non-contact sensing, particularly for medical applications including wound monitoring, cardiac activity detection, and Parkinson's disease assessment.

He has secured multiple grants including seed funding from N.C. PSI for horticultural crop production efficiency and an Educational and Technology Fund from NCSU for wireless sensing projects.
His lab, the SSCS Lab, focuses on research at the crossroads of sensor hardware/architecture, signal processing, operating systems, algorithms, and human factors, with applications in human-computer interaction, healthcare, and cybersecurity.
