Dr. Cheng Lin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Victoria, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. His academic journey includes a BS and MS from Hohai University (China) and a PhD from the University of Kansas (USA). He has held positions at the University of Victoria since 2016, advancing from Assistant to Associate Professor. Prior to academia, he worked as a Geotechnical Engineer at Terracon Consultants, Inc. from 2012–2016.
Dr. Lin’s research focuses on soil erosion and scour, non-self-supporting materials, sustainable waste reuse, pile foundations (especially for LNG facilities), storm surge walls, slope stability, and pavement engineering. His work integrates experimental methods, numerical modeling, and field testing to address challenges in geotechnical infrastructure resilience and environmental sustainability.
His recent publications (2022–2025) emphasize innovative materials (e.g., lignin-reinforced loess), freeze-thaw impacts on geosynthetics, and advanced testing methods for pile performance under scour conditions. He actively explores computational techniques like the material point method for simulating soil-geosynthetic interactions.
Dr. Lin currently supervises Master’s and PhD students in geotechnical engineering, prioritizing candidates with numerical modeling expertise. His lab focuses on practical applications of geotechnical research, including field monitoring of pile-raft foundations and energy pile systems.
