Cheng Chin is a full Professor at the University of Chicago's Department of Physics, affiliated with the Enrico Fermi Institute and the James Franck Institute. He joined UChicago in 2005 and has held visiting roles at institutions including Innsbruck University, ETH Zurich, and Tsinghua University. His research focuses on experimental AMO physics, Bose-Einstein condensation, quantum simulation, and strongly interacting Fermi systems.
Education: B.S. in Physics from National Taiwan University (1993), Ph.D. from Stanford University (2001) under Steven Chu. Postdoctoral research at Stanford and Innsbruck University before joining UChicago.
Research Interests: Experimental AMO physics, quantum degenerate gases, quantum simulation of high-energy systems, Feshbach/Efimov states, thermophoretic levitation, and matter-wave interferometry. Key projects include the Quantum Matter Synthesizer for precise atom manipulation, domain wall dynamics in BECs, and fermion-mediated interactions in ultracold mixtures.
Notable Achievements: Elected Academician of Academic Sinica (2024). Recent work includes transitions between atomic/molecular BECs, quantum simulation of Unruh radiation, and coherent many-body reactions. His lab develops advanced imaging techniques for quantum gases and explores quantum networking via entanglement transfer.
Collaborations and Infrastructure: Leads the UChicago Ultracold Atom Lab, collaborates internationally on quantum engineering projects, and maintains experimental setups for laser cooling, optical lattices, and high-resolution imaging of quantum states.
