Chen Hu is an Associate Professor of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, with joint appointments in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences and the Department of Biostatistics at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is affiliated with the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and plays a key role in NRG Oncology, contributing to national clinical trials in lung cancer and radiation oncology.
- PhD and MS in Biostatistics, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
- BE in Bioengineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Dr. Hu specializes in translational biostatistics, with core expertise in survival analysis, prognostic modeling, and the design and analysis of clinical trials. His research focuses on improving cancer treatment outcomes, particularly in lung cancer, through advanced statistical methods. He has contributed to major trials including RTOG-0617 and NRG-LU005, and his work integrates radiation oncology, biostatistics, and patient survival modeling.
His recent publications show a strong emphasis on statistical methodology, radiation therapy toxicity prediction, and clinical trial design. Themes include dose-response modeling, longitudinal data analysis, machine learning in oncology, and prognostic nomogram development. These works reflect a consistent focus on rigorous biostatistical applications to real-world oncology challenges.
Dr. Hu holds significant editorial and advisory roles, including:
- Editorial Board Member, Journal of Clinical Oncology
- Statistical Advisor, Nature Medicine
- Associate Editor, Clinical Trials: Journal of the Society for Clinical Trials
- Methodology Editor, International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics
- Chartered Member, CONC Study Section, NIH
He is deeply committed to education and mentorship, serving as Associate Director of Education in the Division of Quantitative Sciences, co-leading the Survival, Longitudinal, and Multivariate (SLAM) Data Working Group, and mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. He is also an invited faculty member of the AACR/ASCO Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop. His training programs equip oncology researchers with advanced statistical tools for impactful research.
Dr. Hu is actively involved in research leadership through his role at NRG Oncology and his contributions to multi-institutional studies and clinical trial protocols. He collaborates extensively across institutions and disciplines, focusing on improving cancer care through evidence-based statistical innovation.
