Dr. Charlotte Thomas serves as Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds three significant leadership roles: Director of the Great Books Program, Director of the Philosophy and Art Study Abroad program, and Co-Director of The Thomas C. and Ramona E. McDonald Center for America's Founding Principles.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Philosophy from Emory University
- M.A. in Philosophy from Emory University
- B.A. in Philosophy and Great Books from Mercer University
Specializing in ancient Greek philosophy and culture, Dr. Thomas explores comparative ancient philosophies and ethical frameworks through classical texts. Her research centers on Platonic philosophy, Homer's epics, and Thucydidean historiography, culminating in her 2019 monograph 'The Female Drama: The Philosophical Feminine in the Soul of Plato's Republic' (Mercer University Press). Current projects examine Thucydides' influence on Plato and prepare groundwork for a future book on Homeric studies.
She teaches History of Ancient Philosophy, Human Nature and Art (abroad), and service-learning intensive Introductory Ethics courses. As Great Books Program Director, she guides first-year students through foundational texts from Homer to Plato. Her interdisciplinary approach connects philosophical inquiry with artistic expression and civic education through the centers she co-directs.
