Dr Charlotte Ryland is an Honorary Faculty Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, specializing in German literature and translation studies. As Founding Director of The Queen's College Translation Exchange and Director of the Stephen Spender Trust, she promotes creative translation as a tool for language education and cultural engagement. Her research bridges literature, politics, and pedagogy, with a focus on Holocaust representation and widening participation in language learning.
Education: PhD in German literature (focused on Paul Celan's work), Postdoctoral Researcher on the Writing Brecht project (2014–2018), and former Lecturer in German at The Queen’s College. She edited New Books in German for a decade and co-edited Brecht-related scholarly editions.
Research interests include the role of creative translation in education, transnational German studies, and the intersection of literature/poetry with political contexts. Her advocacy work includes founding the Oxford Languages Advocacy Network (2024) and Inclusive Outreach through Translation (2021), emphasizing accessibility in language programs.
Her publications span monographs on Paul Celan's surrealist encounters (2010), co-edited Brecht volumes, and articles on translation pedagogy. She has collaborated on Brecht's dramatic fragments and theoretical writings, contributing to both academic and public engagement initiatives.
