Charlotte Elisheva Fonrobert serves as Associate Professor of Jewish Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at Stanford University and is the (returning) Director of Stanford's Taube Center of Jewish Studies.
Her academic journey includes earning a Ph.D. from Berkeley GTU, Center for Jewish Studies, establishing her expertise in rabbinic literature and gender studies.
Professor Fonrobert's research centers on the intersection of gender and religious law in ancient Jewish contexts, with particular focus on menstrual purity laws. Her work examines how rabbinic and Christian traditions have interpreted biblical gender roles, especially regarding ritual purity systems. Through detailed textual analysis of Talmudic literature, she explores how menstrual laws evolved from biblical mandates to complex rabbinic frameworks that shaped women's religious status.
Her influential publications include the monograph "Menstrual Purity: Rabbinic and Christian Reconstructions of Biblical Gender" and co-edited volumes "The Cambridge Companion to the Talmud and Rabbinic Literature" and "Talmudic Transgressions," which have significantly advanced scholarly understanding of rabbinic legal development and gender dynamics in ancient religious traditions.
As Director of the Taube Center for Jewish Studies, Fonrobert oversees academic programming, research initiatives, and community engagement that promote interdisciplinary approaches to Jewish studies while connecting traditional scholarship with contemporary issues.
