Charlotte Brooks is a Professor in the Department of History at Baruch College's Weissman School of Arts and Sciences, City University of New York (CUNY). Originally from California, she holds a B.A. in History from Yale University and M.A./Ph.D. in History from Northwestern University. Prior to Baruch, she taught at the University at Albany-SUNY.
Her research focuses on 20th-century U.S. history, Asian American studies, and transnational Chinese diaspora experiences, with emphasis on race, immigration, urban transformation, and Cold War politics. Her current project, Improbable Diplomats, examines U.S. Foreign Service outsiders in Republican-era China.
Brooks has published extensively on Chinese American historical experiences, including four books: The Moys of New York and Shanghai (2026), American Exodus (2019), Between Mao and McCarthy (2015), and Alien Neighbors, Foreign Friends (2009). Her articles explore archival methodology, political activism, housing discrimination, and community formation.
