Charles Tonui

Charles Tonui is a PhD candidate at Wageningen University & Research focusing on polycentric SDG governance arrangements in East Africa through the Governing SDG interactions project. Since 2009, he has served as a Research Fellow at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) in Nairobi, Kenya, where he contributes to climate resilience research, policy translation, and project management within the Climate Resilience Economies programme.

His educational background includes:

• Master's in Environmental Planning and Management from Kenyatta University
• BSc in Environmental Science from Egerton University

Tonui actively participates in climate change discussions across multiple levels - local, national, regional, and international (including UNFCCC COPs) - to advance resilient and sustainable economies in Africa. His research spans disaster studies, risk analysis, environmental sciences, agricultural policy, and climate adaptation with strong regional expertise in East Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

His scholarly work demonstrates consistent focus on agricultural systems transformation, climate governance, and community-based conservation approaches. Publications reveal expertise in analyzing socio-eco-technical change pathways, climate-smart agriculture implementation challenges, and market-based conservation mechanisms like the Mikoko Pamoja mangrove project in Kenya.

As an active contributor to evidence-based policy discussions through the Africa Research and Impact Network (ARIN), Tonui bridges academic research with practical policy development in climate resilience and sustainable development across African contexts.
