Charles T. Spencer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). His research focuses on zoonotic and re/emerging pathogens, particularly Francisella tularensis, Ebola, pandemic influenza, hantavirus, SARS, and MERS, to understand and combat severe inflammatory responses. His lab investigates mechanisms of immune activation, cytokine production, and metabolic changes during infections, aiming to identify therapeutic targets for diseases like ARDS and sepsis.
Dr. Spencer’s recent publications highlight his interdisciplinary approach, spanning immunology, neuroscience, and computational biology. Key trends include the role of NKT cells in cytokine storms, neuroinflammation caused by Francisella tularensis, and vaccine development for tuberculosis. His work also extends to public health interventions during the Covid-19 pandemic and proteomics in mental health disorders.
His research is supported by grants, including a $1.5M award to study inflammatory responses in immune system diseases. He leads the Interdisciplinary Research and Education (IDRE) Lab, mentoring undergraduate researchers and collaborating across fields.
