Charles Scales is an Associate Dean for Clinical Research Initiatives and a member of the Duke University School of Medicine faculty since 2013. As a urologic surgeon and clinical/health services researcher, he oversees strategic clinical research planning, recruitment, and integration of health data with technology. He serves as Associate Professor in both the Department of Urology and the Department of Population Health Sciences, and is affiliated with the Duke Clinical Research Institute and the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy.
Dr. Scales' research spans disciplines including emergency medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, and geriatrics, with a focus on epidemiology and health services research. His work emphasizes translating clinical advances to broader populations, particularly through the multicenter Prevention of Urinary Stones with Hydration (PUSH) study – the largest stone prevention trial to date.
He leads national efforts to build clinical research capacity in urology and co-leads a data initiative addressing health equity and quality of care for urologic conditions. In education, Dr. Scales directs Duke's annual course on data and healthcare transformation in the Master of Management in Clinical Informatics program.
