Charles Peterson is an Associate Professor of Africana Studies at Oberlin College, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the American Society of Aesthetics’ Diversity Caucus and contributes to film reviews for the Africa Knowledge Project. His research focuses on Africana philosophy, film, and political/cultural theory, with current work exploring 'Social Nullification and the Materiality of Black Life.' He teaches courses like Africana Philosophy (AAST 232) and Africana Philosophies of Education (AAST 280). Through Oberlin’s partnership with Pioneer Academics, he guides high school students globally on advanced research projects.
His publications include Beyond Civil Disobedience: Social Nullification and Black Citizenship (2021), analyzing African American citizenship via Social Contract Theory, and DuBois, Fanon, Cabral and the Limits of Anti-Colonial Leadership (2007), critiquing anti-colonial strategies. Earlier work includes co-editing De-Colonizing the Academy (2003). His writing bridges theoretical frameworks with grassroots activism, emphasizing decolonial praxis and systemic critique.
Peterson’s academic contributions extend to interdisciplinary collaborations, such as Oberlin’s African American Music minor, and public engagement through lectures and mentorship programs.
