Charles Martin is a Professor at the Australian National University (ANU), leading the Sound, Music and Creative Computing Lab within the School of Computing. His research focuses on intelligent musical instruments, combining music technology, machine learning, and human-computer interaction to create innovative tools for artistic expression. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and teaches courses in Sound and Music Computing and Art and Interaction Computing.
Research Interests: Martin’s work bridges computational creativity, predictive interaction, and embodied cognition. He develops systems like the Intelligent Musical Prediction System (IMPS) and PhaseRings, exploring how AI can assist musicians in improvisation and performance. His lab emphasizes collaborative work, creating interfaces that blend physical and digital elements for expressive music-making.
Publications: Over 50+ peer-reviewed articles, including recent work on AI-human collaboration in augmented reality, generative AI in HCI (GenAICHI), and perceptually-uniform sound morphing. His research spans music technology, HCI, and machine learning applications.
Lab and Collaborations: Leads a team of PhD researchers and collaborators globally. Current projects include embodied predictive instruments, AR music interfaces, and AI-driven dance systems. Performs with Ensemble Metatone and Andromeda is Coming, blending traditional percussion with digital innovation.
