Charles Langmuir is the Higgins Professor of Geochemistry at Harvard University's Earth and Planetary Sciences department. His research focuses on the solid Earth geochemical cycle, particularly mid-ocean ridge systems, convergent margins, and mantle dynamics. He leads the Langmuir Group and is a core member of the VOICE (Volcano, Ocean, Ice, and Carbon Experiments) initiative, investigating links between glacial cycles and Earth's interior processes.
Central to his work are studies on how sea-level changes influence mid-ocean ridge magmatism and hydrothermal activity. Key contributions include pioneering analyses of sediment-hosted volcanic glasses from the Juan de Fuca Ridge to trace magma composition changes over millennia.
