Research Interests: Kurzman’s scholarship combines empirical rigor with theoretical innovation. He examines the unpredictability of social movements, the role of intellectuals in democratization, and the dynamics of Islamic modernity. Recent work explores the globalization of social science research and the evolving threat landscape of extremism. His analyses often challenge conventional narratives, such as the rarity of Muslim terrorism and the limitations of democratic forecasting.
Publications Trends: His articles span terrorism studies (Socius), global sociology (Social Forces), and Middle East politics (International Journal of Middle East Studies). Themes include methodological critiques (e.g., Millian methods), the impact of technology on Islamic discourse, and the interplay between ideology and governance.
Grants & Leadership: As director of the North Carolina Consortium for Middle East Studies (2010–2023), he fostered regional studies collaboration. His mentorship has shaped generations of scholars, with a focus on interdisciplinary training and public engagement. Current projects include the Arab Public Data Initiative and studies on forecasting failures in geopolitical conflicts.
Labs/Teams: He collaborates with institutions like the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security, producing annual reports on Muslim-American involvement in extremism. His work often integrates quantitative data analysis with qualitative historical research, emphasizing policy relevance.
