Charles J. Ammon is a Professor of Geosciences at the Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the Department of Geosciences. He serves as the Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs since 2022.
- Education: B.S. in Physics (Penn State), M.A. in Geology (SUNY Binghamton), Ph.D. in Geophysics (Penn State)
His research focuses on earthquake seismology, including seismic imaging of the lithosphere, rupture processes of large earthquakes, and earthquake location methods for remote mid-ocean ridges. He integrates signal processing techniques into his work and has contributed software tools like Receiver-Function Analysis and Moment-Tensor Estimation for seismic data analysis.
Ammon’s research also extends to seismic wave propagation and seismic monitoring, as evidenced by his advisory role for the US Air Force. His work bridges observational seismology and computational methodologies.
Scientific Awards
- Fellow, American Geophysical Union
He actively teaches courses on earthquake science, spanning non-science majors to advanced graduate students. Ammon has held leadership roles in seismic organizations, including the EarthScope Consortium (formerly IRIS), where he chaired the Global Seismographic Network Standing Committee.
