Charles Geier is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research in the Department of Human Development and Family Science at the University of Georgia's College of Family and Consumer Sciences. His research investigates neurodevelopmental mechanisms underlying goal-directed behaviors and habits during adolescence, with implications for obesity, smoking, and depression.
His educational background includes:
- PhD in Cognitive Psychology/Neuroscience, University of Pittsburgh (2009)
- MS in Neuroscience, Ohio University (2002)
- BS in Biological Sciences, Ohio University (2000)
Dr. Geier employs multimodal fMRI, behavioral tasks, and advanced statistical methods like GIMME to analyze brain connectivity dynamics. His work examines how reward and control systems interact to shape health behaviors, with particular focus on the transition from goal-directed actions to habitual responses in young populations.
Prior to his current role, he served as Assistant Professor (2011-2017) and Associate Professor (2017-2023) at Penn State. He currently contributes to academic discourse as an Editorial Board Member for Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience and Section Board Member for Brain Sciences.
