Charles Friedman

Charles Friedman is the Josiah Macy Jr. Professor of Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. He also holds professorships in Information (School of Information) and Health Management & Policy (School of Public Health). His work bridges biomedical informatics, medical education, and health systems innovation.

Dr. Friedman focuses on developing learning health systems that integrate advanced information technology with medical education and practice. His research explores how individuals and teams interact with health informatics tools to improve patient outcomes.

Recent publications highlight his leadership in creating FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) digital knowledge frameworks, optimizing clinical workflows, and enhancing CPR protocols through simulation studies. His work spans systemic innovation in healthcare delivery and education.

As founding director of Michigan's health informatics program, he has trained over 400 professionals since 2012. His career includes executive roles at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT and leadership at the University of Pittsburgh's biomedical informatics center.
