Charles Fleddermann is a Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of New Mexico, affiliated with the School of Engineering and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has been at UNM for over 27 years, teaching courses in circuit theory, plasma physics, and engineering ethics.
- Education: PhD (1985), MS (1980) in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; BS (1977) in Electrical Engineering from University of Notre Dame.
His research interests focus on engineering ethics, particularly in nanotechnology, and plasma physics applications in material processing and solar photovoltaics. He pioneered optical diagnostics of plasmas and developed methods for plasma etching and solar cell passivation.
The article trends show a dual focus: (1) Engineering ethics education and policy (2002-2010) and (2) Plasma and GaAs switch physics (1999-2002). His work spans technical studies on semiconductor switches and pedagogical contributions to ethics in engineering.
As Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Education, he shaped discourse on engineering pedagogy. Notable contributions include the 4th edition of his textbook Engineering Ethics (2011) and collaborative experiments on plasma-decomposition reactors.
