Charles Egan is a Professor of Chinese and Director of the SF State Chinese Flagship Program at San Francisco State University (SFSU). He holds a B.A. from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. His research focuses on the evolution of classical Chinese poetic genres and literary translation, particularly of Zen Buddhist poetry. He has published critically acclaimed translations, including the award-winning Clouds Thick, Whereabouts Unknown: Poems by Zen Monks of China (2011), which earned the Lucien Stryk Prize. Currently, he is preparing an anthology of inscriptions and poetry related to the Angel Island Immigration Station.
Dr. Egan’s academic contributions span Chinese literature, translation studies, and East Asian cultural history. His work bridges scholarly analysis with accessible translation, emphasizing the preservation and interpretation of pre-modern texts. He oversees the Chinese Flagship Program, fostering advanced proficiency in Mandarin and cultural competency through immersive learning.
