Charles Dorn is the Barry N. Wish Professor of Social Studies at Bowdoin College, specializing in the history of education. He focuses on the civic roles of educational institutions, including colleges, universities, and schools in the U.S. His research challenges narratives of higher education crises by examining its historical contributions to the common good. Dorn’s work spans books like For the Common Good (2017) and Patriotic Education in a Global Age (2018), which explore patriotism in schools and higher education’s societal impact. He holds a PhD from UC Berkeley (2003), MA from Stanford (1994), and BA from George Washington University (1990). Awards include the Fulbright Scholar Award (2012-2013) and the History of Education Society’s Best Article Prize (2012). Recent grants include the Landhaus Fellowship (2024) and Spencer Foundation funding (2011-2012). His research engages transnational education policies, environmental education, and UNESCO’s role in global initiatives. Dorn has presented globally at institutions like the University of Cape Town and the Rachel Carson Center. Current projects address Disney’s educational media and UN environmental education programs.
