Charee Mooney Thompson

Charee Mooney Thompson is an Associate Professor in the departments of Communication and Biomedical and Translational Sciences at the University of Illinois. Her research focuses on health communication dynamics in personal and clinical settings, examining how identity and communication shape health understanding. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Texas at Austin and B.A./M.A. degrees from Arizona State University.

Her research explores two core areas: 1) how individuals' health identities influence their perceptions of health, and 2) how healthcare providers and social networks manage uncertainty about others' health. Recent work includes studies on health disparities in maternal care, long-COVID patient experiences, and communication strategies among athletes with hidden health conditions.

Thompson teaches CMN 462: Interpersonal Health Communication and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects involving virtual reality training for physicians and fall-prevention tools for wheelchair users. Her work has been covered by 9+ news outlets and recognized in campus excellence awards.
