Chao Xie

Chao Xie, B.Med., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and a core member of the Center for Musculoskeletal Research (CMSR) at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD). His academic roles include serving as Vice Chair for Biomedical Research & Training in China at URMC and a key leader in the University of Rochester China Institutes (URCI), fostering international collaborations in musculoskeletal research.

Dr. Xie's education includes an M.D. from Zunyi Medical College (1992) and an MSBA in Medical Management from the University of Rochester Simon Business School (2017). His postdoctoral training at UR's Center for Musculoskeletal Research (2003–2007) and Department of Urology (2002–2003) laid the foundation for his career in translational musculoskeletal science.

His research focuses on bone infections (osteomyelitis), implant-associated biofilm infections, and fracture healing. He has pioneered studies on bisphosphonate-conjugated antibiotics, pH-responsive biomaterials, and immune mechanisms in musculoskeletal infections. His work integrates immunology, biomaterials, and clinical translation to develop novel therapies for chronic bone infections and improve orthopaedic implant outcomes.

Awarded the OREF Award (2012–2014), DePuy J&J Fellowship (2008–2009), and other accolades, Dr. Xie has authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles. He leads the URCI Joint Orthopaedic Research Center, training Chinese physician-scientists in musculoskeletal research and translational medicine. His lab collaborates globally, particularly through the AO Trauma CPP Bone Infection Program.

Dr. Xie’s expertise spans preclinical models (murine, sheep), clinical trials, and interdisciplinary projects combining engineering and immunology. His future work emphasizes developing targeted therapies for antibiotic-resistant infections and advancing tissue-engineered solutions for bone regeneration.
