Chantal Gratton is a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at Queen Mary's School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, within the Department of Linguistics. She holds a PhD from Stanford University and specializes in interactional sociolinguistics, sociophonetics, and the interplay between language, affect, and gender. Her work examines how linguistic variation shapes social structures and interpersonal relationships.

Research focuses on prosody's role in embodiment, non-binary transgender identity construction via pitch and linguistic markers, and vowel space size as an interactional variable. She employs both quantitative and qualitative methods. Current projects explore affective alignment through vowel variation and the semiotics of prosody in physical activities like yoga and bodybuilding.
