Changcheng Xu is a Senior Scientist in the Plant Science Group of the Biology Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he has been conducting research since 2009. His work focuses on understanding the regulatory mechanisms controlling lipid metabolism, trafficking and storage in plants.
Dr. Xu's research spans several key areas of plant lipid biology:
- Mechanistic basis of intracellular lipid transport
- Genetic, transcriptomic and proteomic identification of factors controlling lipid metabolism
- Impact of altered lipid metabolism on carbon allocation, biomass production, and stress responses
- Genetic engineering targets for enhancing lipid accumulation in plant vegetative tissues
His laboratory employs a comprehensive suite of techniques including Arabidopsis molecular genetics, fluorescence imaging, electron microscopy, lipid metabolic analysis using radiolabeled isotopes, and physiological studies using chlorophyll fluorometers and photosynthesis systems. Recent publications reveal a strong focus on lipid droplet dynamics, membrane lipid remodeling, and the connections between cytoplasmic and chloroplast lipid storage systems.
Dr. Xu's work has significant implications for bioenergy and sustainable agriculture, particularly in developing strategies to increase oil production in non-seed plant tissues.
His scientific contributions include numerous high-impact publications in journals such as Nature Communications, The Plant Journal, Plant Physiology, and The Plant Cell, with research highlighting how manipulating lipid metabolism pathways can improve plant growth under stress conditions and enhance oil accumulation in vegetative tissues.
