Chandreyee Mitra serves as Associate Professor of Biology at North Central College, where she joined the faculty in Fall 2015. Her research integrates animal behavior, physiology, anatomy, and evolutionary biology through whole-organism approaches to investigate phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental changes.
Her academic credentials include:
- B.A. from College of the Atlantic (2001)
- M.S. from University of Nebraska (2005)
- Ph.D. from University of Nebraska (2011)
Dr. Mitra's work centers on environmentally mediated phenotypic plasticity using two model systems: field crickets examining flight-reproduction trade-offs in polyphenic morphs, and swallowtail butterflies analyzing salt-based nuptial gift dynamics. Her research explores how environmental variables affect male fitness, female reproductive success, and offspring viability through resource allocation mechanisms.
Scientific awards: None documented in source materials.
She actively recruits undergraduate researchers for her laboratory, emphasizing hands-on projects with local insect species to advance understanding of behavioral adaptation. Current initiatives focus on establishing field and lab protocols for phenotypic response studies in variable environments.
Dr. Mitra leads an active research laboratory investigating evolutionary adaptations in insect systems, with ongoing projects examining environmental triggers for plastic trait expression and their fitness consequences across generations.
