Chandra M. Sehgal, Ph.D. is a Research Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Ultrasound Research Laboratory at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Director of the Ultrasound Service Center, and Director of the Ultrasound Core for SAIF, all within the Department of Radiology. Her extensive career spans several decades with significant contributions to ultrasound technology and medical imaging.
Dr. Sehgal earned her B.S. and M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Delhi, India (1972 and 1974, respectively), followed by a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Saskatchewan (1979). Her post-graduate training included a Research Fellowship in Environmental Health at Johns Hopkins University (1979-1981) and a Research Associate position in the Department of Physics and Biophysics at Mayo Clinic (1981-1985).
Her research focuses on ultrasound technology with particular emphasis on therapeutic applications, diagnostic imaging, contrast-enhanced techniques, and AI integration. Dr. Sehgal's work bridges fundamental ultrasound physics with clinical applications, particularly in cancer therapy, vascular disease imaging, and novel diagnostic approaches. Her laboratory investigates both the technical aspects of ultrasound generation and detection as well as their clinical implementation.
Analysis of her publication history reveals a consistent trajectory of innovation in ultrasound technology. Early work focused on fundamental ultrasound physics and scattering properties, while more recent publications emphasize therapeutic applications, AI integration, and specialized diagnostic techniques for specific conditions including cancer, vascular disease, and liver fibrosis. Her research demonstrates a progression from basic science to increasingly translational and clinical applications.
Dr. Sehgal maintains active research programs through her Ultrasound Research Laboratory, which develops and tests novel ultrasound applications. Her work has received continuous funding supporting investigations into ultrasound for cancer therapy, vascular imaging, and diagnostic applications. She collaborates extensively with clinicians, engineers, and basic scientists across multiple disciplines.
Her laboratory serves as a hub for ultrasound research and development, supporting multiple projects related to therapeutic ultrasound, diagnostic techniques, and novel imaging approaches. The Ultrasound Core for SAIF provides specialized imaging capabilities for research studies, while the Ultrasound Service Center ensures clinical translation of research findings.
