Dr. Chad W. Cuss is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental Science department at Memorial University's School of Science and the Environment. His research focuses on analytical nanogeochemistry and chemometrics, with a particular emphasis on developing standardized methods for analyzing natural nanoparticle systems.
- Specializations: Absorbance and Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Data Science, Dissolved Organic Matter, Field-Flow Fractionation, ICP-MS, Machine Learning, Multivariate Statistics, Natural Colloids, single-particle ICP-MS, Trace Elements
Dr. Cuss leads the Laboratory for Environmental and Analytical Nanogeochemistry (LEAN) and collaborates internationally through the Interlaboratory Collaboration for Analytical Nanogeochemistry (ICAN). His work spans analytical chemistry, chemometrics, and environmental geochemistry, with applications in climate change and oil sands treatment landscapes.
Current research projects include NSERC-funded initiatives on environmental nanogeochemistry (2023–2028), geochemistry in oil sands (2019–2024), and climate change impacts (2024–2025). Grants include Discovery, Alliance, and CRD awards.
- Awards: President’s Gold Medal (Trent)
Dr. Cuss supervises undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers, including two MSc/PhD advisees and collaborations involving eight scientific staff/technicians. He teaches foundational chemistry, environmental analytical chemistry, and senior seminars.
