Chad Gunnoe is a Professor of History and Department Chair at Aquinas College, serving concurrently as Interim Provost and Accreditation Liaison Officer. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (1998), M.A.T.S. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (1990), and A.B. from College of William and Mary (1986). His academic leadership roles include directing the Irish Studies minor program.
Dr. Gunnoe's research focuses on early modern central Europe, particularly religious and political dynamics in Southwestern Germany during the late 16th century. He specializes in Reformation-era intellectual history, early modern science (especially Paracelsianism), and witchcraft studies. Notable works include Thomas Erastus and the Palatinate (2011) and co-edited volumes on the Heidelberg Catechism and Paracelsian debates.
His recent scholarship (2013–2019) emphasizes Erastian political theology, Swiss-German academic networks at Heidelberg University, and plague historiography. His work bridges theological, medical, and political dimensions of early modern Europe, often analyzing how religious conflicts shaped intellectual developments.
Publications span monographs, edited collections, and translations into Dutch, Japanese, and Portuguese. His writing frequently engages primary sources like correspondence between Reformation figures such as Zacharias Ursinus and Thomas Erastus.
