Cesare Hall is a Professor of Aerothermal Engineering at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Energy, Fluids and Turbomachinery academic division and the Turbomachinery research group. His work focuses on advancing aircraft propulsion systems through innovative turbomachinery solutions to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
His research centers on open rotor configurations for noise reduction and emissions control, boundary layer ingestion (BLI) for propulsion efficiency gains, and ultra-high bypass ratio engine fan design. He investigates critical aerodynamic phenomena including non-uniform flow ingestion, noise generation mechanisms, fan operability limits, and aeromechanical forcing under real-world conditions. His work addresses fundamental challenges in translating theoretical concepts to practical aircraft propulsion systems.
Professor Hall leads multiple strategic research initiatives including Open Rotor Design for Reduced Noise, Boundary Layer Ingesting Engine development, Distributed Propulsion systems, and Compact High-Speed Compression Systems. He contributes to system-level aircraft propulsion design such as engines for The Silent Aircraft initiative and utilizes operational flight data to improve in-service aircraft performance. He teaches Turbomachinery I (4A3) and offers PhD supervision opportunities while maintaining a Fellowship at King's College, Cambridge.
