Celia Lowe

Celia Lowe serves as Professor of Anthropology and International Studies at the University of Washington's College of Arts & Sciences, concurrently directing the Center for Southeast Asia and Its Diasporas. Her dual appointments span the Department of Anthropology and the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies.

Her research centers on the anthropology of reason, biosecurity frameworks, and post-colonial science studies, with deep expertise in Indonesia. Key interests include:

• Travels of biological knowledge between EuroAmerica and Southeast Asia
• Multispecies ethnography in archipelagic contexts
• Political ecologies of conservation and disease

Her publication trends reveal sustained engagement with Southeast Asian scientific practices, particularly examining how global health security paradigms like avian influenza response intersect with local Indonesian realities and post-9/11 security logics.
