Cecilia J. Hillard is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), serving as Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Neuroscience Research Center. She holds the G. Frederick Kasten, Jr. Endowed Chair in Parkinson’s Disease Research. Dr. Hillard earned her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from MCW (1983) and BS in Chemistry from the University of Virginia (1977). Her research focuses on cannabinoid pharmacology and endocannabinoid signaling mechanisms, with emphasis on stress response modulation, neuroinflammation, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s. She has pioneered studies on endocannabinoid roles in mood regulation, immune function, and PTSD. Dr. Hillard has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Cannabinoid Research Society and MCW’s Distinguished Service Award for mentorship.
Her research spans three major areas: biochemical mechanisms of endocannabinoid synthesis/degradation, endocannabinoid regulation of stress responses, and cannabinoid-mediated immune modulation in neuroinflammation. She collaborates across disciplines to explore translational applications in human health, including PTSD biomarkers and Parkinson’s therapy. Dr. Hillard’s >200 publications reflect her leadership in cannabinoid science and commitment to advancing biomedical research through mentorship and institutional leadership.
