Catriona Ellis is a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Strathclyde, specializing in modern South Asian history with a focus on children, childhood, and colonial social policies. She joined Strathclyde in 2018 and was promoted to Senior Teaching Fellow in 2023. Her research emphasizes inclusive education practices, co-creation in classroom settings, and decolonizing museum practices. Ellis holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2016) and an MEd in Academic Practice (2018).
Ellis’s research explores state interventions in children’s lives during late colonial South Asia, including her monograph *Imagining Childhood, Improving Children* (2023). She leads the RSE-funded project *Free and Brave: Scottish Educational Mission in Madras*, examining transnational educational links between Scotland and South India. She is affiliated with the Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare and the Critical Youth and Childhood Studies Collective.
Her teaching includes courses on global childhoods, disease history, and imperial histories. She co-created the MSc module *No Matter How Small: Children’s Health Across the British World*. Ellis is deputy subject leader for History and chairs the Humanities EDI committee. She collaborates with the Engaged Scholarship Hub on the community project *Histories of Play*.
Ellis’s scholarly contributions span book reviews, articles on juvenile justice, and decolonial museum practices. Her work aligns with UN SDG 4 (Quality Education) and addresses themes of equity, historical memory, and postcolonial legacies.
