Professor Cathy Gormley-Heenan serves as the University Provost at Ulster University, playing a major role in institution-wide strategic leadership and planning, including shaping institutional strategies and priorities. With 26 years of experience in Higher Education, she has held previous roles including Deputy-Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Impact) and Research Institute Director.
Professor Gormley-Heenan holds a first-class honours degree in politics from Queen's University, Belfast; an MPhil in Modern Middle East Studies from Oxford University; and a PhD in History and International Affairs from Ulster University. She was also a UK Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University's JFK School of Government and Public Policy.
Her research focuses on political elites, peace processes, the politics of divided societies, public policy and governance. As a Professor of Politics, her work particularly examines the complex political landscape of Northern Ireland, Brexit implications, constitutional futures, and justice systems in divided societies. Her research fingerprint shows significant contributions to UK Social Sciences (100%), Northern Ireland Arts and Humanities (48%), Peace Process studies (29%), Population Censuses (21%), Ireland studies (20%), Political Leadership (19%), Brexit (15%), and Justice (14%).
Professor Gormley-Heenan's scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with contemporary political challenges, particularly regarding Ireland, North and South. Her recent work addresses constitutional questions, Brexit implications, and peace processes, reflecting her commitment to providing authoritative, independent analysis on critical political issues.

Professor Gormley-Heenan has extensive leadership experience beyond academia. In 2021, she was appointed by the Minister for Finance (NI) as a fiscal commissioner in the Independent Fiscal Commission for Northern Ireland. She is a founding member of ARINS (Analysing and Researching Ireland, North and South) through the Royal Irish Academy and the University of Notre Dame, and serves as Chair of the Advisory Body for UK in a Changing Europe (UKICE). As a qualified Chartered Director (CDir), she serves on the Board of UKRI's Research England and previously held positions on Matrix, the Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel, and Catalyst Inc. She also served on the UK Government's Advisory Body on EU Exit, Universities, Research and Innovation.
Her professional activities span academic leadership, policy advisory roles, and board governance, demonstrating a commitment to applying scholarly expertise to real-world governance and policy challenges in Northern Ireland and across the UK.
