Catherine Smith is a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham's Department of Theology and Religion and a core member of ITSEE (Institute for Textual Scholarship and Electronic Editing). Her work bridges theology, digital humanities, and computational linguistics, focusing on text analysis and digital editing.

Her research employs computational tools like XML and Python to analyze textual traditions, spanning biblical manuscripts, medieval chronicles, and literary texts such as Dickens. She actively supervises PhD students through interdisciplinary collaborations.
Recent projects include creating digital editions of Zoroastrian rituals (MUYA), multispectral imaging of Codex Zacynthius, and XML transcription guidelines for New Testament manuscripts. She has co-supervised students in ITSEE and the theology department.
Smith's scholarly outputs include collation tools, critical editions of New Testament manuscripts, and datasets on catena scholia. Her work has been published in books, software, and datasets, with a focus on digital methods in textual analysis since 2007.
