Catherine O'Brien

Catherine O'Brien is a Research Fellow in Human-Computer Interaction (Qualitative) at the Department of Computer Science, University College London. She conducts qualitative research on digital forensics and online content reporting tools, with expertise spanning both computer science and material culture studies.

Her educational background includes:

• DPhil in Archaeology (cognitive and anthropological) from the University of Oxford
• MSc in Visual, Material, Museum Anthropology from the University of Oxford
• BA in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Oxford

Dr. O'Brien's research focuses on the intersection of human experience and technology, particularly examining how digital interfaces impact wellbeing and how physical craft practices persist in digital environments. Her work combines material engagement theory with contemporary HCI challenges, exploring topics from pottery making during the pandemic to digital forensic triage for first responders. She employs diverse qualitative methods including digital ethnography, sensory ethnography, semi-structured interviews, and co-design workshops using evidence-based design artefacts.

Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory connecting material culture studies with contemporary digital challenges. Early work examined pottery skill development during the pandemic, while more recent publications focus on digital forensics and content moderation systems. This evolution shows her ability to apply anthropological perspectives to emerging technological challenges in security and social media.

Dr. O'Brien is currently involved in two major research projects:
