Catherine F. West is a Research Professor of Archaeology at Boston University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences and the Marine Program. Her research focuses on zooarchaeology, environmental archaeology, and stable isotope analysis, particularly in Arctic/Subarctic ecosystems like coastal Alaska. She explores long-term human-environment interactions, climate change impacts, and applications of archaeological data to modern ecological challenges.
Education: Ph.D., University of Washington, 2009.

- Effects of Holocene climate change on prehistoric subsistence in Arctic/Subarctic regions
- Application of archaeological records to contemporary environmental issues
- Zooarchaeological and isotopic analyses in historical ecology
- Field projects in Kodiak Island, Chirikof Island, and the Aleutian Islands
Funding: Supported by the National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, and National Geographic Society. Directs the Boston University Zooarchaeology Lab, which studies global archaeological animal remains from the Paleolithic to historical eras.
Labs/Partnerships: Zooarchaeology Lab collaborates with Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, the Smithsonian Institution, and the University of Washington’s Burke Museum. Hosts courses on zooarchaeology and human impacts on ancient environments.
