Catherine Dewhirst

Catherine Dewhirst is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ), affiliated with the School of Humanities and Communication. She is a member of the Centre for Heritage and Culture within the Institute for Resilient Regions. Previously, she served as the Queensland representative for the Australasian Centre for Italian Studies (ACIS) Management Committee (2009-2022). Her research focuses on cultural, political, and social histories with an emphasis on migration, transnationalism, and silenced voices in history. She has been awarded early-career and publication accolades and has presented internationally in Australia and France.

Her key research areas include Italian migration, women’s life-histories, and the impact of racism through a transnational lens. Current projects involve analyzing material culture in multicultural newspapers and exploring the relationship between Liberal Italy and Italian migrant press. Past grants include studies on Queensland’s Italian migrant contributions and Australia’s minority press history.

Dr. Dewhirst teaches courses such as Global History, 1500-1900 and Women's European History. She supervises research in migration histories, transnational studies, and gender history. Professional affiliations include the Australian Historical Association (AHA) and the Australasian Centre for Italian Studies (ACIS).

Her education includes a PhD from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), a Master of Arts from UNSW, and a Diploma in French Civilization from Paris-Sorbonne. She is a non-accredited translator in French and Italian. Her ORCID profile is 0000-0002-5278-0075.
