معرفی
Catherine Chauvel is a Research Director at CNRS and teacher-researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), affiliated with Université Paris Cité. She works within the Cosmochemistry, Astrophysics and Experimental Geophysics (CAGE) research team.
Her research focuses on:
- Mantle geochemistry and plume volcanism, with special emphasis on the isotopically diverse Polynesian volcanic chains to understand mantle heterogeneities
- Island arc geochemistry, investigating the geochemical budget between arc volcanism, subducting plates, and recycled material, particularly in the Lesser Antilles arc
- Continental crust composition, establishing average upper crust properties and tracing geochemical fractionation during weathering and erosion processes
Dr. Chauvel utilizes geochemical tools to understand terrestrial rock formation and long-term evolution of Earth's mantle and crust.
Her significant recognition includes:
- ERC Advanced Grant (SHRED project) - studying how current volcanoes contain material dating from the Hadean period (4.6-4 billion years ago)
As a CNRS Research Director, she leads major research initiatives and mentors junior scientists. Her work bridges fundamental geochemical research with planetary science questions, connecting modern geological observations with Earth's earliest history.
She is based at IPGP office 268, 1 rue Jussieu, Paris.
