Catherine Barnes is an Adjunct Faculty and Senior Lecturer in the Center for Justice & Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU), School of Social Sciences and Professions. She holds a PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University and has over 30 years of experience in peacebuilding, conflict transformation, and public policy. Her work spans 30+ countries, focusing on dialogue facilitation, policy advocacy, and program development in conflict zones such as Myanmar, South Asia, and the Caucasus.

- Key Roles: Adjunct Associate Professor at EMU, Independent Consultant for NGOs and IGOs, Adviser to the EU and UN
Her research emphasizes inclusive peace processes, war-to-peace transitions, and the role of civil society in conflict resolution. Notable projects include designing UN conferences, facilitating Myanmar peace dialogues, and advising on transitional justice in post-war contexts. She teaches courses on peace process design, facilitation, and public policy at EMU and international institutions like the University for Peace.
Publications focus on peace process mechanisms, sanctions/incentives in mediation, and civil society’s role in conflict transformation. Her work has been published by Conciliation Resources, Berghof Foundation, and the African Union Commission.
Professional service includes EMU’s Core Curriculum Redesign Committee and contributions to the OECD-DAC International Dialogue on Statebuilding.
