Dr. Catherine Baker is an Associate Professor in 20th Century History at the University of Hull, based in the School of Humanities and Department of History. She specializes in post-Cold War history, international relations, and cultural studies, with a focus on the cultural politics of events like the Eurovision Song Contest and the post-Yugoslav region. Her research explores intersections of national identity, LGBTQ+ rights, and global race politics. She has led major studies for the British Council and Liverpool City Council on Eurovision's soft power impact.
Research Interests: Post-Cold War history, cultural diplomacy, transnational identity politics, LGBTQ+ visibility in media, post-Yugoslav region studies, and the legacies of imperialism. Her work combines archival research with oral histories, such as interviews with UN peacekeepers and veterans.
