Catharine Axley is an Assistant Professor at the Bellisario College of Communications, Pennsylvania State University, specializing in documentary filmmaking and media studies. She holds a B.A. from Yale University and an MFA from Stanford University.
Her work focuses on cultural and social justice themes, exemplified by her feature documentary ATTLA, which premiered on PBS' Independent Lens in 2019. The film received multiple accolades, including Best Documentary Feature at the American Indian Film Festival and Best Indigenous Film at the BendFilm Festival. Her current project, supported by ITVS, explores cruise tourism and is developed under the 2021 Fall Logan Nonfiction Fellowship.
Before Penn State, she taught at the University of Kentucky as a Filmmaker-in-Residence and at Spelman College, designing a documentary editing course. Her films have screened at festivals including the San Francisco International Film Festival and DOC NYC.
