Catharina Svanborg is an Expert and Research Team Manager at the Division of Microbiology, Immunology and Glycobiology (MIG) at Lund University, where she also serves as Principal Investigator at the Lund University Cancer Centre (LUCC). With a distinguished career spanning several decades, she has established herself as a leading researcher in cancer therapeutics, particularly known for her groundbreaking work on HAMLET (Human α-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells).
Dr. Svanborg's research focuses on developing highly selective cancer therapies that destroy tumor cells without harming healthy tissues. Her work on HAMLET, a complex of partially unfolded α-lactalbumin and oleic acid that selectively kills tumor cells while sparing normal differentiated cells, represents a significant breakthrough in targeted cancer treatment. This research has led to clinical applications for skin papillomas and bladder cancer.
Her scientific contributions have been widely recognized, with her work appearing in prestigious journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, New England Journal of Medicine, and International Journal of Cancer. Her research has been cited extensively and has influenced clinical practice, with several patents referencing her discoveries.
- Principal Investigator for 'Two novel approaches to cancer therapy - HAMLET and a c-MYC degrading protease' (2024-2027)
- Supervising doctoral research on 'Alpha1-oleate-induced tumor cell death' and 'Genetic control of host resistance to UTI'
- Collaborating with international researchers across multiple disciplines
Dr. Svanborg leads a research team investigating the cellular targets and in vivo effects of HAMLET, with documented therapeutic effects in both animal models and patients. Her work contributes significantly to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
