Cathal McCall is a Professor of European Politics and Borders at Queen’s University Belfast, affiliated with the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics. He holds roles as LINCS Programme Coordinator and Fellow of The Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. His research focuses on European Union cross-border cooperation, conflict transformation, and the geopolitical implications of Brexit on the Irish border.
McCall has led major projects including the British Academy-funded 'The Irish Border Challenge: From Backstop to Border Poll' (2019) and contributed to initiatives like the Leverhulme Interdisciplinary Network on Cybersecurity and Society (LINCS). His work bridges policy analysis and academic rigor, addressing issues such as partition legacies and transnational governance.
His research interests emphasize the interplay between EU policies and conflict resolution, with a focus on border regions. Key contributions include analyzing Brexit’s impact on Irish-Northern Ireland relations and exploring the role of cross-border cooperation in post-conflict societies.
