Catalina Reyes-Nivia is a Researcher at the Coral Reef Ecosystems Lab, University of Queensland. She holds a BSc (Honors) in Biology from Universidad del Valle (Colombia) and a PhD from the University of Queensland, supervised by Associate Professor Sophie Dove and Dr. Guillermo Diaz-Pulido. Her research focuses on coral reef resilience under climate change, particularly ocean acidification, warming impacts, and microbioerosion processes. She investigates ecological interactions such as parrotfish predation on corals in Colombian reefs and employs interdisciplinary approaches to understand reef dynamics across scales.
- Education: BSc (Honors) Biology, Universidad del Valle; PhD Marine Science, University of Queensland
Research interests include coral reef ecosystem services, climate change mitigation strategies, and the socioecological dimensions of marine conservation. Her work bridges ecological and evolutionary perspectives to predict future reef trajectories using ancient DNA and modern experimental methods. She collaborates with global institutions to advance reef resilience science.
Recent publications highlight coral heat tolerance mechanisms and socioenvironmental impacts of fisheries decline in tropical regions. Catalina actively contributes to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, focusing on translating scientific findings into actionable conservation policies.
