Cary Sanchez-Leguelinel serves as Associate Professor and Deputy Chair in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. As founding Chair of the Department, she spearheaded the development of the Human Services and Community Justice major and revised the Minor in Health, Wellness, and Physical Education to align with contemporary human services frameworks.
Education:
- B.A. in Psychology/Sociology from New York University
- Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Fordham University
Research Focus: Professor Sanchez-Leguelinel's scholarship centers on multicultural counseling competencies, childhood/adult trauma interventions, and mental health support systems. Her work integrates peer counseling methodologies with student adjustment challenges, particularly addressing sophomore-year transitions and field education efficacy in community settings.
Awards:
- Distinguished Service to the College award (2nd recipient selected by College community)
Academic Engagement: She teaches core courses including Effective Parenting (CSL 130), Advanced Interpersonal Counseling Skills (CHS 310), Field Education sequences (CSL 311/CHS 382), and Stress Management (PED 180). Fluent in English, Spanish, and French, she maintains active membership in the American Psychological Association and NYS Education Department - Office of the Professions.
