Prof. Dr. Carsten Westphal is a faculty member in the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Dortmund, where he conducts research in condensed matter physics with a focus on surface and thin film systems. He is based in the physics building on Otto-Hahn-Str. 4a and leads an experimental research group utilizing advanced electron scattering and spectroscopic techniques.
His research interests lie at the intersection of structural and electronic properties of low-dimensional materials and interfaces. Using atomic-scale experimental methods, his group investigates thin films on metal and semiconductor surfaces. Their work is highly sensitive to minute variations such as layer thickness, controlled down to sub-atomic precision. They employ a range of techniques including high-resolution XPS, XPD, UPS, and ARPES using soft X-rays and UV radiation from the university’s DELTA 1.5 GeV electron storage ring. Complementary surface topography studies are conducted using scanning tunneling microscopy, supported by LEED and PEEM. The experimental setup is currently being enhanced with helium cooling to achieve temperatures as low as 10 K, enabling low-temperature investigations.
The research group fabricates layered and nanostructured systems through controlled preparation methods. Their experimental infrastructure at the DELTA synchrotron facility highlights a strong emphasis on in-house instrumentation and high-precision measurement science.
