Carsten Bjarkam is a Clinical Professor and Senior Consultant at Aalborg University Hospital's Department of Neurosurgery, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine. He holds a PhD and DMSci., and is a member of Retslægerådet. His roles include coordinating the 4th semester of the medical program and supervising 9 PhD projects in experimental neurosurgery, neuroanatomy, and spinal interventions. His research focuses on spinal neurosurgery, chronic subdural hematoma, and experimental models using large animals like pigs. He has authored influential neuroanatomy textbooks and contributes to Scandinavian neurosurgery training programs. Over 1200 teaching hours in neuroanatomy and neurosurgery highlight his dedication to education. Recent publications (2024–2025) address topics like ganciclovir distribution in porcine CNS, neuromonitoring practices, and surgical techniques in pigs.
His work includes leading randomized controlled trials such as ACTIVE and DRAIN-TIME 2, focusing on postoperative drainage and fluid management in neurological conditions.
