Smith employs intensive longitudinal methodologies like experience sampling to study daily well-being and interpersonal processes. Her work explores how dark personality traits (e.g., narcissism, psychopathy) influence relationships and sexual behavior, as well as societal impacts of gender norms. She actively contributes to university governance through roles on the Faculty Senate and Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women, advocating for non-tenure track faculty, anti-hazing policies, and graduate mentorship initiatives.
Her publications span journals like Personality and Individual Differences and International Journal of Public Health, addressing topics from pandemic mental health to dark personality’s societal implications. Beyond research, Smith champions inclusive education and community engagement, integrating her scholarship with campus service and policy development.
