Carrie Oelberger

Dr. Carrie Oelberger is an Associate Professor at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on prosocial organizations—entities like nonprofits, NGOs, and philanthropic foundations—examining how internal dynamics such as workforce well-being, equity in decision-making, and the interplay of altruistic and private interests impact organizational effectiveness. She advises Ph.D. applicants and teaches courses in nonprofit management, public policy, and development practice.

Dr. Oelberger earned a PhD in Organization Studies (Stanford University, 2014), an MA in Sociology (Stanford, 2010), a PGDip in Maori and Pacific Nations Education (Victoria University of Wellington, 2006), and a BA in History (Haverford College, 1999).

Her research emphasizes two critical areas: (1) how grantmaking foundations' non-altruistic interests shape funding decisions and equity outcomes, and (2) how prosocial organization staff navigate work-life interfaces, with implications for burnout and career trajectories. She critiques the suppression of private interests in prosocial sectors, arguing such neglect harms both employees and organizational missions.

Recent work explores motivational frameworks for public employees, the role of relationships in career identity, and strategies to mitigate burnout through compassionate management practices. Her findings highlight the need for systemic reforms to balance organizational altruism with human needs.

Dr. Oelberger actively bridges academia and practice, having founded an international NGO focused on East African education and advising philanthropic foundations on organizational design.
